Fall 2023 Update

I was just reading Jorma Kaukonen’s (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) blog Cracks in the Finish and felt compelled to make a short update here in this space that I use to update regularly and enjoy looking back on from time to time to see where I was and what was inspiring me. Just about 4 weeks ago, I lost my home (partially) to a fire. And my mom was diagnosed with heart failure the day before. And of course, my entire existence as I knew it changed in those instances, and I am in a new temporary house that is very nice, but is not home, for another 9 months while we rebuild, and at the same time keeping my fingers crossed that my parents health will start an upward swing (my dad also was diagnosed with cancer, but the best kind possible). Talk about an existential experience all around. There are moments I am able to laugh, and there are moments that my mind is swirling so fast I just have to take a nap.  I’m glad for the season – autumn has always been a time to rest, to put old ideas to bed and incubate new ones, a time to reflect on the previous year, and make plans for what is to come. I’m still in the processing stage, but I’m looking forward to getting past this hump and actively working towards something new and hopefully better than I could have ever imagined.

Food Network Magazine Feature and Egg in progress!

I love it when I can say, as an artist who makes a lot of bird and tree art, that I get to “branch out” and do things that I don’t normally do. This project was certainly one of those things! I was honored to be asked by the Food Network Magazine to design and decorate an Easter Egg that represents the state of Kansas for their April article titled “The United States of Easter Eggs” where a “crafty blogger” from each state was asked to “decorate an egg honoring their home state”! (PS: Check out Food Network Magazine, April 2018, page 143 for the full story!)

The first step was sketching up some concepts that I thought would represent Kansas well. I sent these off to one of the editors and we decided to go with the sunflower design! I don’t think anybody DOESN’T think of Kansas when you think of sunflowers.

I had the choice of either using a real egg or an eggnot (a ceramic egg that will not break into a yolky mess or get smelly)… I obviously chose the eggnot! I received one in the mail from the Food Network and got to work! I used a light blue acrylic paint as the background for my sunflower design.

Being a paper cutting artist, naturally I chose to use paper for my design. Luckily I like to work with tiny details because some of these paper cuts were tiny! I used tissue paper painted with acrylic paint for the leaves and petals, and Canson Mi-Teintes art paper for the stars and black details on the sunflower.

To glue the paper to the egg, I used Golden Acrylic Gel Gloss. This is my favorite glue/ sealer to use on my collaged works.

Because I knew the egg needed to be photographed, I opted to use a matte varnish over the design so that it did not reflect so much light with the glossy gel that I used to glue and seal it. And VOILA! The finished egg! I was happy to carefully wrap it up, ship it back to the kind folks at Food Network Magazine, and await the release of the April issue of Food Network Magazine to see it with all the other states! 🙂

Michael Gulezian In Concert with Art by Angie Pickman

March 25, 2017 | Social at 7pm | Concert at 7:30
Cider Gallery • 810 Pennsylvania St. • Lawrence, KS
Suggested donation $15 • Cash Bar
I hope you will join me in welcoming my friend, musician Michael Gulezian, all the way from Arizona, to The Cider Gallery in Lawrence for an intimate concert of his amazing guitar music on Mar. 25, 2017. I will also be exhibiting, at this event, a selection of recently completed paper cuttings. I have been a fan of Michael’s music for many years and was lucky enough to meet him as he toured through Kansas City in 2015. He was introduced to my cut paper art and animation not long after that, and he liked it! Enough to want to collaborate! We’ve since been working together to make an animated music video for a song off his forthcoming album. It is my great honor to be able to present my art alongside his on this one night during his current tour. A huge thank you to The Cider Gallery for making this event possible.
ABOUT MICHAEL GULEZIAN
Michael Gulezian (gu-LAY-ze-in) is one of the most highly acclaimed solo acoustic instrumental guitarists of our time. He is a phenomenal technical guitarist with the rare ability to transcend his own virtuosity, creating music that touches and moves people at the deepest level. He’s been called the musical link between John Fahey and Michael Hedges. Artists as diverse as Michael Hedges, Willy Porter, and Henry Kaiser have claimed him as a primary musical influence; young lions such as Erik Mongrain and Andy McKee are quick to acknowledge him as an inspiration. In concert, Michael is all warmth and humor … and though it’s visually breathtaking to watch him perform, a concert with Michael is more than a display of cutting-edge virtuosity – it is the passionate communion of master musician engaged with his audience in the mystery of self-revelation, creating music of atmospheric power, ecstatic joy, and haunting beauty.  If you enjoy the artistry of musicians such as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges – guitarists who amaze us with what ten fingers and one guitar can do – then you will love Michael Gulezian. ABOUT ANGIE PICKMAN
Angie Pickman, Lawrence, KS, is a nationally recognized cut paper artist that combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage to create intricately detailed works of art and animations. She received her master’s degree in 2004 from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, which is where she first learned of the art of silhouette animation artist Lotte Reiniger (1899 – 1981). Her love of nature and the tranquility of the rural terrain, as well as Reiniger’s style and technique, inspired Pickman to set off on the artistic path that she continues today. She exhibits at galleries and art fairs nationally, does illustration, animation and design work, conducts public presentations on her art, and teaches various art classes and workshops. Most recently, her work has been featured in Midwest Living and Martha Stewart Living magazines, and her animation work premiered on PBS in the summer of 2016 in the documentary “Daughters of the Forest”. Pianos On Parade

Thanks to Wayne Nagy for talking the helm and fixing up this piano for Pianos On Parade – a community project with Keys 4/4 Kids – KC and Kansas City Music Teachers Association. I couldn’t be there to help but was able to get him some prints of my work to put on the piano and he did a fantastic job (and was kind enough to send pictures).
