Monday Things

I called in sick to work today.. haha.. sort of. As Jorma Kaukonen said in his blog, when you’re self-employed, there are no days off. True.. although it’s easy to push things aside, they’re always right there in my head letting me know they’re waiting to get done, and they don’t relent until I git’em done. There’s probably treatment for that. Anyway, winter cold’s got me down, but an hour extra of evening sunshine, spring temps on the horizon, my Beachwood Sparks record on repeat (makes me think of summer), and a pot of rice pudding on the stove has got my engine revving a little..

Progress shot of the record cover I made last week.. trying to figure out the layout for the backside so I can finish it up this week.

Rainy Saturday

squirrelrain

I just walked by my deck door and caught this neighbor peeping in my window, sheltering himself from the rain with his tail.. So I cleared some old flowerpots from a dry space on the deck and left him some seeds, since I’m pretty sure that’s what he (she?) was hoping for.

Other Saturday things:
* Lunch buffet at India Palace in Lawrence (I wish I had the capacity to eat more than one plate — so good…)
* Catching up on Jorma Kaukonen’s blog “Cracks In the Finish” — always optimistic and inspiring, full of integrity, and written with a good heart.
* Major couch time listening to rain and thunder (while nursing a sore throat with hot coffee & Kahlua).
* Recollecting last night’s performance of Mummenschanz at the Lied Center at the University of Kansas — simple and brilliant puppetry and silent theater. Take a look at them here: http://mummenschanz.com/en/
* Thinking about getting some work done… Thinking about it…

Budding Moon in progress + etc.

Today (Friday) I will be dropping off this work titled “Budding Moon” to the Lawrence Arts Center as my donation toward their 2013 Annual Art Auction, which is a great event that generates a large portion of funding for their education endeavors. The paper cutting is actually almost finished, just a bit more work to do on it this morning before I frame it up and roll it out.

Yesterday I finished the cover art (excluding the back side which I still need to finish) for forthcoming record “Jade Colored Moon” by band Maria the Mexican. It was a really fun design to work on and I can’t wait to show you. In terms of ‘commercial design’, if you will, it’s one of my favorites, if not my most, that I’ve done.

I’ve been on a paper cutting roll lately — I’ve got some good creative energy going, and it’s exciting (all the while, I’m totally behind on the business side of things.. limitations of a one-man band..). Which may explain why I’ve been up since 1:30am and never went back to sleep. I woke up excited to work on more paper cuttings.. after having a dream about going into to the mountains alone on a vision quest and chickening out and going to a movie theater instead.. what does it all mean??? A day of balancing work and naps (and dream interpretation?) ahead. Til next time..

Cutting Corner

I had to take a photo of my workspace for the upcoming short article about my work in Lantern Journal (which I did the cover art for).. I just photographed one little corner where I sit to do my cuttings since my workroom is akin to that of a sloppy teenager with bits of paper and tissue paper strewn about, a chair with stuffing coming out of it, shelves of paper and shipping supplies, old paper cuttings, magazine clippings, cd covers, notes to self, and other randomness taped to the walls.. It gets a full cleaning every once in awhile, but for the most part, it definitely looks lived in.. or I should say, worked in.

I’ve been going strong on this all day.. and I’ll be back at it all day tomorrow. I’m really excited about it — I’m using papel picado, the Mexican form of paper cutting, as my main inspiration.

Waking Moon Sneak Peak

I finished this up and sent the image off to Lantern Journal for use on their cover. I believe the issue comes out around March 20, and there will be a small article about my work inside.
