I had dinner out in the country at a friend’s house the other night. Lucky her – she has a barred owl roosting in a tree trunk in her driveway! I’ve never seen a barred owl in person (in the wild, anyway). They have such mysterious faces and eyes- this is zoomed in pretty far, and the owl knew she (he?) had my attention – she turned her head and looked right at me. It didn’t help that I may have been squealing in delight… We saw her fly into the nest from a group of trees with a snake in her clutches. She was obviously feeding her young – she flew off empty-handed to a neighboring tree and let out the most amazing call. Click over to this link and listen to the sounds of the barred owl.
