RMNP Day 2

I spent the first half of the day trekking the trails around Bear Lake and Nymph Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Then I sat on a rock by a small but swift river and ate oranges while I dipped my toes in the water. I love the sound of moving water.

RMNP Photos

It felt good to finally give my camera a run today in Rocky Mountain National Park.. Or I should say, rather, to give myself an opportunity to look a little more closely at my surroundings. I haven’t gone out with my camera on any country roads or anywhere else for a long time, which is something I prefer to do often.rmnp1

Cosmic Dance

cosmosbedroom

“When we are alone on a starlit night, when by chance we see the migrating birds in autumn descending on a grove of junipers to rest and eat; when we see children in a moment when they are really children, when we know love in our own hearts; or when, like the Japanese poet, Basho, we hear an old frog land in a quiet pond with a solitary splash – at such times the awakening, the turning inside out of all values, the “newness,” the emptiness and the purity of vision that make themselves evident, all these provide a glimpse of the cosmic dance.” -Thomas Merton

Seeking that glimpse, as always, above my old bedroom window on a moonlit night during the 2009 Perseid Meteor Shower, Atchison, KS.

Last Friday

Dinner at a friend’s house in the country on her deck surrounded by trees, bird feeders, and birdhouses while listening to lots of bird songs and barred owls hooting to each other. Doesn’t get much better than that, I think.

Happy Feet

It’s been really tough working inside when the weather outside is as beautiful as it’s been for the last few days with no plans to stop being so nice… I’ve even gone running everyday this week just to give myself a good excuse to get away from work and be out in it. I intended to have breakfast and coffee with my squirrels this morning (I’ve gone ahead and accepted the fact that I am one of those people and I’m ok with that. My neighbor recently joked that pretty soon I’ll have squirrels and raccoons and various other critters keeping me warm at night..), but my neighborhood cat showed up instead. EDIT: I’ve added the song “Happy Feet” by Paolo Conte to this post at the wise suggestion of reader Pauline. *smiley face*

Morning Visitors

morning visitorsToday I woke up in Wichita so I’m not going to be able to provide breakfast for my regular menagerie.. But yesterday, a bluejay, my regular squirrel, and a common grackle made a fine trio. (Shot through the window on my door so I wouldn’t scare them away).

Bird on a Bike

I caught this bird hanging out on my neighbor’s old bike yesterday afternoon. This might very well inspire a near-future paper cutting.
