I’ve found that one of the prettiest times to drive through the Kansas Flint Hills is at sunrise… During my drive back from the art fest in Salina this time around, it was a bit cloudy and rainy, but the sky was photo worthy nonetheless.

A couple photos from yesterday morning’s post-storm bird watching drive. My mission was to find an Indigo Bunting, which I did (!), but I came upon this Brown Thrasher which posed beautifully for my camera.

Indigo Buntings, of which I’ve seen three already this summer, are very interesting because of the beautiful color of the male during the summer (a bright, almost cerulean, blue) and because they are migratory and use the stars to navigate during their night flights. I did get a photo of the Indigo Bunting, but it wasn’t very good as the bird was hiding behind the leaves. He was hard to miss, though, because his color sticks out like a sore thumb.

And last to pose was a female dickcissel.

I may not receive employer provided health insurance or paid vacation, but one of the awesome things about working for myself from home is that when the weather is as beautiful as it was today, I can take my work outside (or put things off until I’ve had my nice weather fix).
The only drawback is that there are so many things to be distracted by, it’s easy to forget about the work that needs to be done…

I’m sitting at my desk staring out the window at a deep grey sky relieving itself of it’s heavy burden and listening to it growl all the while. Though I do enjoy a good thunderstorm, right now, I’m in the mood for sun and flowers! Today’s agenda: working on two different commissions — one involves cats, one involves dogs.

Today I wrapped up my end of a project that will be part of a local fashion magazine spread. I’ll be sure to put more details and photos here when I get them. It feels good to get things behind me. I’ve got a million things on my to-do list and another million on my want-to-do list, and figuring out where to start is usually the hardest part.

I just finished up a job duplicating 8 different heirloom silhouettes for a client. This makes me want to get started on some silhouettes of my family members.. I’m smelling holiday gift ideas…

Yesterday, I rode through a fairly nasty midwestern storm. I’ve been through much worse, but the ominous looking sky gave me good reason to take pictures of it from my phone. The first picture is from this morning, post storm.

You can’t see it because I, of course, did not have my camera with my zoom lens, but there is a coyote looking at me from the bend in the road in the center of the picture. I went for an impromptu morning coffee drinking country drive and we crossed paths, and I rolled my window down and whistled and he stopped and we looked at each other for a minute and then both went on our ways. I don’t know if it is because there was a storm yesterday or because it is just a beautiful morning, but I saw SO MANY different birds out scouting around, including a hawk carrying off his live breakfast of some sort of small rodent. I felt a little sorry for whatever it was. Anyway, here are some storm pictures from my phone:

After the storm rolled through, the night sky was incredibly beautiful and clear, and I could see the entire moon, although only a crescent of it was lit up.

Bea-U-Ti-Ful…

Two years ago today, I left my adopted home of NYC to return back to my home state of Kansas.

This was one of the first photographs that I took when I got here. I can still remember how vibrant all the sights and sounds and smells seemed and how I noticed every little detail — it was as if I’d entered some new dimension of reality. I was experiencing the old familiar in a totally new way. It was a fresh start, to say the least.
