Today (Friday) I will be dropping off this work titled “Budding Moon” to the Lawrence Arts Center as my donation toward their 2013 Annual Art Auction, which is a great event that generates a large portion of funding for their education endeavors. The paper cutting is actually almost finished, just a bit more work to do on it this morning before I frame it up and roll it out.
Yesterday I finished the cover art (excluding the back side which I still need to finish) for forthcoming record “Jade Colored Moon” by band Maria the Mexican. It was a really fun design to work on and I can’t wait to show you. In terms of ‘commercial design’, if you will, it’s one of my favorites, if not my most, that I’ve done.
I’ve been on a paper cutting roll lately — I’ve got some good creative energy going, and it’s exciting (all the while, I’m totally behind on the business side of things.. limitations of a one-man band..). Which may explain why I’ve been up since 1:30am and never went back to sleep. I woke up excited to work on more paper cuttings.. after having a dream about going into to the mountains alone on a vision quest and chickening out and going to a movie theater instead.. what does it all mean??? A day of balancing work and naps (and dream interpretation?) ahead. Til next time..
I had to take a photo of my workspace for the upcoming short article about my work in Lantern Journal (which I did the cover art for).. I just photographed one little corner where I sit to do my cuttings since my workroom is akin to that of a sloppy teenager with bits of paper and tissue paper strewn about, a chair with stuffing coming out of it, shelves of paper and shipping supplies, old paper cuttings, magazine clippings, cd covers, notes to self, and other randomness taped to the walls.. It gets a full cleaning every once in awhile, but for the most part, it definitely looks lived in.. or I should say, worked in.
I’ve been going strong on this all day.. and I’ll be back at it all day tomorrow. I’m really excited about it — I’m using papel picado, the Mexican form of paper cutting, as my main inspiration.
I finished this up and sent the image off to Lantern Journal for use on their cover. I believe the issue comes out around March 20, and there will be a small article about my work inside.
8 x 10 inch paper cutting. Auctioned off last night at the Monster Drawing Rally. I added color at home before I went and then finished cutting it and gluing it to the background at the event.
The drawing rally was tons of fun. Thanks so much to all you folks that came out!
Here’s what I’ll be cutting out at tonight’s Monster Drawing Rally in Kansas City.. Check this link for more details: http://www.facebook.com/events/121228168056838/
Putting a spring theme to it as I wait out the next round of blizzard headed this way.. I kind of like being snowed in. Except I dug out yesterday to restock Phoenix Gallery and hit up the record store. Needed some new (well, used actually) records to stay warm. Til next time..
I designed & cut this for their website & other promo items. I’ll post links shortly.
