LIGHT by Clement Wood
(from The White Peacock, copyright 1928)

Tea… and the wide driveways packed with
cars…
Doorman… wraps off… hostess… wide waxed
floors
Leading to windows ceiling the close indoors
Behind beckoning transparent bars….
And people, clotted like a swarm of stars
Centering the Milky Way: poor puzzled bores
Gaping at one another. The hostess pours
Her tepid fluid, with particulars
Of this frivolous scandal, that surprising
Nothing…. The vacant faces blur and sway,
Lifeless in their attitudinizing….
And then, into this void, this vacuous nay,
My glad eyes see you come, like Sirius rising,
Like a moon rising, like the sun rising into day.
