I was sitting on my deck last night with my citronella candle burning and a drink in hand (in a ball jar — they are easier to wash because you can actually fit your hand in them to scrub the bottom) and I was watching the flame through the jar and decided it was iphone photo worthy… and there you have it.

Photos taken on a hike in the Greenhorn Mountains, close to Rye, Colorado, 2009.

The weather this weekend was too perfect to stay inside and work. Instead I spent my time doing lots of walking, meeting up with friends in town celebrating the KU Final Four/ Championship game, sitting in parks, drinking coffee on my deck, etc. I think this is why I like having four seasons — when the weather is beautiful, I appreciate it more.. Last night I was having a late dinner on my deck with my neighbors and we were wholly surprised to see june bugs and fireflies already so early in the year.. And then we had a long pseudo-philosophical discussion about how amazing it is that there’s these little bugs flying around that light up. Nature is all pretty crazy-amazing when you think about it. That’s why I like to be out in it and make art about it.

Back to the paper cutting I go.

Book Cover Design: The Ghost of the Wooden Squid

I did this design for Ryan Buynak’s collection of poetry, published by Paradisiac Publishing, and the book is now available on Amazon.com. I basically started with a paper cutting of a squid that I designed and it’s silhouette made of tissue paper. I photographed it and then tweaked the coloring and added text in Photoshop. And there you have it. Check it out on Amazon here:

Villages in Progress

I’m shifting gears for a little bit and working on a small series of 5 x 7 inch villages.. I’ve also got some larger village themed paper cuttings in the pipeline.

Full Flower Moon

I decided to go with a moon… 11 x 14 inch paper cutting. A “Full Flower Moon” is the name of the full moon in May. Found online: “Quite simply, May brings bright brushes to paint the earth canvas with infinite flowers. In the full moon light of this month, the flowers are said to grow at night, and even dance in honor of the moon.”
