Barred Owl

Barred OwlI had dinner out in the country at a friend’s house the other night. Lucky her – she has a barred owl roosting in a tree trunk in her driveway! I’ve never seen a barred owl in person (in the wild, anyway). They have such mysterious faces and eyes- this is zoomed in pretty far, and the owl knew she (he?) had my attention – she turned her head and looked right at me. It didn’t help that I may have been squealing in delight… We saw her fly into the nest from a group of trees with a snake in her clutches. She was obviously feeding her young – she flew off empty-handed to a neighboring tree and let out the most amazing call. Click over to this link and listen to the sounds of the barred owl.

Interesting Pairings

1. Intact flower print in a burned out campfire.

2. Feather floating with a plastic cup. Probably pretty obvious without my explanation..

3. This last one may be less obvious.. Pelicans in Kansas!

A Door

The Door

The most awesome, friendly, welcoming door in my town. And possibly the most untouched door as well. An interesting addition to a seemingly abandoned warehouse.

Bette Davis Eyes

hilda
Well, maybe not Bette Davis.. Of all the animals I’ve seen up close and personal, I think cows have the sweetest, most endearing eyes. Whenever I think of Bette Davis, I remember her role in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?”.. Yikes. I wrote a poem many years ago about a cow named Hilda that had tension issues. Perhaps I was actually writing about Bette’s character in that movie.. I digress. This little fella crawled out through the barbed wire and begged for a portrait shot… It’s all in the eyes.

New Toys

Just picked myself up a couple oldies Polaroid Land Cameras. One is a model J66.. the other is the Square Shooter 2. If I were a gun slingin’ cowgirl, I think I’d call myself Square Shooter.
cameras
I digress. The best thrift store in the world is right here in my hometown: bought 15 wine glasses, 2 old-timey butter knives and 2 chopping knives for five buckaroos. The cameras came free – lady says she never knows if they work or not so she just gives them away. The model J66 is in almost perfect condition – came in the original leather case with handwritten notes from its original owner. Apparently it had been thrown in the trash at the thrift store but somebody dug it out and left it for me. Now I just have to figure out where to find film and how to use it…
