Textures by William Stafford

1.
The dwell of a sound for a while
will sometimes diminish all else
and a whole forest lie down at night
for hearing the moon, where the first
tick and its tock are still waiting
for what time it is.

2.
Morning color opens its eyes
where it slept in the mountains.
Oh, it’s afraid! This might be
the day when white comes all the way
back from the sky where it went
when color first came.

3.
And fur—of all presence it is
the most, a million touches
at once, to assure, reassure,
instruct our lives, like this:—
Be here so well that even
one time is enough.

RMNP Day 2

I spent the first half of the day trekking the trails around Bear Lake and Nymph Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Then I sat on a rock by a small but swift river and ate oranges while I dipped my toes in the water. I love the sound of moving water.

RMNP Photos

It felt good to finally give my camera a run today in Rocky Mountain National Park.. Or I should say, rather, to give myself an opportunity to look a little more closely at my surroundings. I haven’t gone out with my camera on any country roads or anywhere else for a long time, which is something I prefer to do often.rmnp1

Casa de Squirrel

naptime

I made acquaintance last night with a nice couple that just moved in next door. They asked if I had any cats, noting the food dish on my deck, and I had to admit that it was there originally for my other neighbor’s cat, who sometimes visits, but had become, instead, the squirrels’ (and birds’ and other seed-eating creatures’) bowl. They’ll surely understand now when they look over from their porch why there are always one or two squirrels chilling out on my deck like it’s their own.

“I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright.” ~Henry David Thoreau
