8 x 10 inch paper cutting.
Forgive me for ignoring the internet side of things lately.. I’ve been in a whirlwind trying to get a bunch of work finished. This is my busiest time of year and the whirlwind will pretty much continue until I hit the road for Colorado in July.
Today I set up for the Mulvane Mountain/ Plains Art Fair in Topeka. Unfortunately I snapped a couple bars on my tent and had to tape it together with duct tape to get it to stand.. but it’s toast after this. New one already ordered (being that I’ll need it for next weekend for Salina)… This art fair runs Saturday & Sunday from 9-5 or something like that.. The details escape me. And I’m slightly delirious as I type from just finishing adding color to three paper cuttings.
I managed to give kayaking a shot on Memorial Day — it was pretty amazing. Once my schedule cools, I can imagine I’ll be paddling around as much as I can. I went with my friend Jeanette and we paddled to a far shore, got out of our boats and trekked along the water line looking for neat things. I found several fossils and a ‘rock creature’ (a rock that looks like a dinosaur head). I love scavenging for things like that.
One last bit of info: “A Cut Above” — the exhibit at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library in Topeka, KS, opened today (June 1). I have 10 paper cuttings in this, plus my animations are also on display.

I’m very excited and honored to be a part of this exhibit at the Sabatini Art Gallery in the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library with Beatrice Coron, Cindy Ferguson, Nikki McClure and Clay Rice, four artists whose work I know well and have followed over the years. I even saw an exhibit of Beatrice Coron’s at the Brooklyn Public Library in about 2004, just after I had started working with cut paper in animation, and never would have imagined my work hanging next to hers. And for this to be a local exhibit to me means all that much more. So, here’s some details. Find more information HERE.

..spinning a Happy & Artie Traum record I picked up yesterday, and taking in the early (still dark) spring morning. Happy Friday. I’ll be hitting up the Final Friday artwalk in Lawrence (Kansas) tonight, including the Annual Art Auction exhibit at the Lawrence Arts Center (I took a sneak peek yesterday..). I’ve got one work — “Congruity” — that will be part of the live auction on April 14. For more info, check out the LAC website.

I picked up this little gem at a thrift store last week — it’s a music box from Luzern, Switzerland. My mom had a very similar one that my great-grandmother had brought back for her from Switzerland, and I can remember it being one of my favorite things of hers (I wanted to live in it.. I still sorta do) and it’s since disappeared into the nethersphere. Now I have my own.
In other random information, I’ve been accepted into Art on the Rockies, an art fair put on by the Vail Valley Arts League in Edwards, CO. This will take place on July 14 and 15, and I’ll be in Denver the weekend before that and Boulder the weekend after. Looking forward to some mountain time… Til next time.

Thanks to Katie Shafer from Scissors, Glue & Paper Happiness for nominating my blog for a Kreativ Blogger Award! This is the second time I’ve been nominated (check out the first time here), and again, I’m not really blog savvy enough to follow all the rules of the game, but I’ll do like I did last time and put some random information about myself and then link to some artist folks that I’ve met somehow or another along the way.
Seven random, possibly useless bits of information about myself:
1. I drink black coffee.
2. I often (mis)quote the movie Spaceballs.
3. I share a birthday with June Carter Cash.
4. I have no tattoos.
5. “I’m a mog. Half-man, half-dog. I’m my own best friend.” (-Spaceballs)
6. My favorite hour of the day is 4 – 5am.
7. My favorite coffee cup in my small collection says “October” on one side and “The Cosmos” on the other..
And here’s seven artsy folks that you should check out:
Barb Fisher Paintings
Folk Art Papercuts by Suzy Taylor
Jessica Simorte Robinette
Remnants by Rebecca Jackson
Laura Engelhardt Fused Glass
Melinda Hutton Jewelry
Jim Sherraden Printmaking
Thanks again Katie!

Still awaiting word on one or two more, and my summer is officially full. Taking a rain-filled unofficial spring break for a couple days before I dive back into my artwork head first.

Today I’m putting some finishing work on a few paper cuttings. Also working on a logo for a fellow from my hometown that’s opening a food truck in North Carolina.
Friday, I dropped off my work at the Lawrence Arts Center (Lawrence, KS) for their Annual Art Auction. I’m honored to be part of this exhibit and auction — there’s was lots of amazing artwork coming in while I was there..
Saturday, the “Paper Anniversary” exhibit opened at The View Arts Center in Old Forge, NY. I have 5 works in this show. I’ll be eager to see some photos since I couldn’t be there. One of the other artists in this exhibit, Carlos Molina from NYC, just happened to be vacationing in Denver last summer while I was at the Cherry Creek Arts Fest, and came to my tent and introduced himself. I’ve long admired his work and was slightly baffled when he told me his name. Small world — and now we’re in an exhibit together.
Sunday, I spent some time working on some ideas for new paper cuttings and animations. I also planted a window garden. I once (err, two years ago) decided to sprout some seeds and did so… about 175 of them, and became overwhelmed and ultimately killed every single plant (accidently – I had no idea what I was doing). So, this time, I am working with about 6 pots and 24 seeds — hopefully I can manage that.. Thyme, Rosemary, and Lavender. The first two to cook with and the last just to smell.. New herbs and paper cuttings coming soon.
