Atchison County State Lake, September 2012.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Waking in the Middle of the Night<\/b> by Robert Bly<\/p>\n<p>I want to be true to what I have heard.<br \/>\nIt was so sweet to hear music last night.<br \/>\nThere is so much joy in being afraid<br \/>\nof the world together.<\/p>\n<p>The snow in the branches,<br \/>\nthe sadness in your hands,<br \/>\nThe foot tracks in the mud,<br \/>\nthe old Inca faces,<br \/>\nThe trout who wait all year<br \/>\nfor the acorns<br \/>\nto descend.<\/p>\n<p>The sitar player is so much<br \/>\nlike the crow, who rises<br \/>\nEach morning in the sky above<br \/>\nthe black branches<br \/>\nAnd cries six cries with no memory<br \/>\nof the light.<br \/>\nEvery musician wants his fingers<br \/>\nto play faster<br \/>\nSo that he can go deeper into<br \/>\nthe next kingdom of pain.<br \/>\nEach note on the string calls<br \/>\nfor one note more.<\/p>\n<p>The hand that has written<br \/>\nall these sounds down<br \/>\nIs like a bird who wakes in the middle<br \/>\nof the night<br \/>\nAnd starts out toward its old nest<br \/>\non the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Robert, I don\u2019t know why you<br \/>\nwould have such Good luck today.<br \/>\nThose few lines about the crows<br \/>\nCrying are better than a whole night<br \/>\nof sleep. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dust from gravel roads lingering in the sun.
