Read my words…

It's Been a Busy Week

These cut out letters are remnants from something (very cool) that I have been working on all week which I’ll be able to tell you about in another week or so.
I also wanted to thank you all for visiting here — I’ve been terrible about updating over the last couple weeks while I’ve been busy doing outside illustration work, and that is going to change very soon. New paper cuttings, new news, more updates to come very soon!

Perseid Meteor Shower 2010

I headed outside earlier hoping to catch a meteor on camera, but no did do. Or, I did not. I saw quite a few, but never managed to time one right. Plus, there were lots of hazy clouds passing through. Here’s a couple pictures anyway:

Kansas at Close Range

I bought this new lens attachment for my camera that is supposed to magnify your subject x10 and it’s pretty neat to be able to get such close-up shots… Except for the fact that, unless I’m using it wrong, you have to be pretty much <--this close--> to whatever it is you’re taking a picture of. I don’t mind that so much for flower shots and such, but someday, when I can afford a more powerful lens (rather than a lens attachment), I’d like to be able to get these kind of close-up shots of things that don’t allow you to get that close.. Like butterflies.. and other happy insects. Here’s some photos from my first outing in my back yard:

Where the Buffalo Roam…

Pardon my sparse posting… Aside from having a nasty cold and not feeling like doing much, all the work I’ve been doing over the last week is either commission based or illustration work that I can’t post just yet… But here is an illustration of a buffalo I did that is not going to be used (I’m doing some work on some Native American folk tales). I had lots of up-close-and-personal time with a herd of buffalo at Custer State Park in South Dakota last month. They are pretty intriguing creatures. Very… beastly? Anyway, here’s my buffalo:

Under The Weather

That’s me.. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a cold, and this one has left me on my rear for a couple days now. I’m inching further and further behind on my to-do list and consuming meals worth of cough drops. Just not in the mood to work. Or think. Or be awake. Woe is me..
Anyway, aside from that, I found myself in the children’s section of my local library the other day and it shot me back to my childhood — the same library I visited in my younger years. I’m of the philosophy that we should never stop being children.. easier said than done, but I often remember how I experienced things as a child and try to recreate that feeling as much as I can. I think it’s about being in the moment and forgetting the minutes before and ignoring the minutes ahead. I say this as I stare at a pile of receipts waiting to be sorted, categorized and filed. Who’s idea was this tax thing again? … I’ll leave you with this video clip from Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas by Jim Henson– I’m pretty sure a good portion of my imagination was shaped by him – Fraggle Rock, Kermit The Frog, and on and on. When I watch his work, it’s pure enjoyment at every moment.

Rural Pearl Update

I’m home from my recent travels and back to work. Finishing up a couple illustrations of Native American folk tales that are going to be used as part of a product insert– more info on that down the road. Also working on a couple commissions before I dig my heels into personal work for my incredibly busy September and October of art shows & travel.

Starting this Friday, my paper cuttings will be displayed at Frick Electronics Modern Art Gallery in the Englewood Arts District in Independence, MO. I don’t have all the details on that yet, but I’ll surely post them when I do.

And one last thing, I’ve finally updated my Etsy shop with all (or at least pretty close to all) of my prints that I have available for sale. I’m going to try to get some of my originals listed for sale online soon for those of you that have inquired.
