New Hobby? Furniture Builder…

shelf1

shelf2

In need of a shelf to house my tv as well as some books and records, I decided to put my (lack of) skills to the test and build my own. After a little internet research, I decided to use 2 x 12 x 6 planks and plumbing parts which included what is called “galvanized steel nipples” and flanges. I needed no other tools to put it together than a hand sander and an electric drill/ screwdriver. Each shelf is supported by 3 pipes (aka, “nipples” — I can’t believe I’m typing that but I think its funny) screwed into flanges on the top and bottom. Though the wood was new, I wanted it to look aged, so I sanded down the edges to look worn, and did a little beating on it with a hammer and various other metal objects. Then, after reading about this method, I soaked a steel wool pad in some vinegar for about 2 hours, and used the vinegar as a stain for the wood. After about 24 hours it had realized its final lovely tone: a light gray with slight hints of the original color here and there and darker gray wood grain. The vinegar and steel wool seem to have some kind of reaction together, and then that mixture creates a reaction with the tannins in the wood. It turned out exactly as I had hoped. If parts were cheaper, I’d probably make lots of these for no good reason.. but the flanges (and I needed 12 of them) were almost $9 each. Cheaper than buying a comparable shelf or tv stand though, and I get the satisfaction of having built my very first piece of furniture. Oh, and the tv is new for me. I haven’t had one in years and swore I never would. Never say never. It is nice to kick back and watch something here and there. No cable hooked up to it, but I do have a Roku device which lets me stream SPACEBALLS! And PBS Nature! And lots of other things… It’s mystifying. Til next time…

Brrrrr….

What does it mean when you wake up to a strong burning dusty smell and find that the motor on your furnace in your rental house has stopped functioning on the coldest night thus far this season? It means that you (I) take no chances, turn off power to the furnace, and bundle up in a down comforter with a laptop for warmth (and for venting frustrations), listen to the wind, and wait for maintenance to arrive in the morning, while anticipating a delayed start to a very busy workday. Can’t cut paper with frozen fingers.. Grumble, grumble, grumble…

Happy Friday

cocobakeIt’s been years since I’ve made or eaten one of my favorite foods… Coconut Bake. It’s a Trinidadian breakfast dish (commonplace in my Brooklyn days). I’ve got salted cod soaking, and tomorrow morning I’ll be feasting on this bread paired with a mixture of sautéed cod, onions, sweet peppers, and tomatoes. Out in the country. Where there’s no phone service or internet. Have a great weekend.

Feeling the Love

The orders keep rolling in and I’ve been rolling ’em out.. Thanks to all you folks who have been shopping in my Etsy store!

Thanks to Mark Murtha for photographing Crafts & Drafts last weekend. You can check out his photos of the event online HERE! (There’s even one of my cheesy mug bundled up in my coat..).

I rarely follow politics (because they frustrate me), but a big congratulations to New York City — I’m excited about their new mayor. I lived there when it was the end of Giuliani’s run, and for many years during the Bloomberg period. It was amazing how I could feel the difference between the two just by the way the city was operating. I think de Blasio will be a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction for having an internal structure that is accessible and relatable to the majority of the citizens.. Now if the country as a whole could get on the right track..

I’m devoting the rest of my week to commissioned work. I’ve got about 10 things on my plate here, and I’ve been behind on them all. Stepping up now… til next time.

May The Juggling Balls Not Fly

In the spirit of randomness and learning something new, I’m teaching myself how to juggle. It’s also a great practice of being totally in the now, plus I assume it’ll build up better hand-eye-brain coordination. And for now, it’s a great workout since I have to chase after the balls constantly. Today was my third go at it, and I turned on this record to practice to, realizing that the beat to this song not only was perfect for the rhythm of throwing and catching, but it also puts me in a good, loose mood, which is necessary for juggling. I went from only being able to manage 4 beats (what I’d describe as throw, throw, throw, catch) before flinging the balls across the room, to 8 beats (before they go flying in every direction) in the matter of the song really. My current skills are laughable, but I’m confident. My utter nerdiness unfolds.
