Weekend Goings-On

This weekend is the annual Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin City, KS. I was late to apply and because of the extreme popularity of the festival, I couldn’t get a booth because they were full. However, Stephanie Thomas of the Business and Professional Woman of Balwin City extended an invitation to me to set up in one of the booths that her organization is in charge of, so many thanks to her! Read more about the Maple Leaf Festival HERE. And if you’re close by, stop by!

Harvest Moon – Paper Cutting

Harvest Moon - Cut Paper Art - 16 x 20 inches

Harvest Moon - Cut Paper Art - 16 x 20 inches

This is the finished product of the workings of yesterday’s post. I’ll be showing this in person in November at Crosstown Station. More details to come in the coming weeks.
I’ve got Pandora Radio on again (pardon me if I start sounding like a blogging advertisement – I’m not being paid for this..) – but wowza’s. Today I entered “Mississippi John Hurt” and I’ve been listening to the likes of Memphis Minnie, Snooks Eaglin, Furry Lewis, Lightnin’ Hopkins, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. This is exciting. I lost a LOT of my music awhile back during a horrid computer crash… It’s really nice to have this musical oasis while I am cutting away. It’s also sorta nice not knowing what’s coming next. Every song is a surprise. Anyway… back to work I go.

UPDATE: For Illustration Friday: “Unbalanced” – these birds look as if they are doing a bit of a balancing act. One of them is a little more balanced than the other.

This work is on exhibit at Crosstown Station in Kansas City through the month of November.

Paper Cutting in Process

Cutting Paper on a Gray Day

Cutting Paper on a Gray Day

What a gray cold day in Kansas. I love it. The trees are yellowing with splotches of orange. The heater is on low. I’m wearing a sweater. I’ve got Pandora Radio on – set it to search for “New Riders of the Purple Sage” and wooooo hooooo it’s been my loving companion all morning/ afternoon/ surely into the evening. Giving me just what I would’ve asked for: The Burritos, Commander Cody, The Band, The Byrds, a few of those getting-to-be-oldies sing-a-long radio hits from Jackson Browne & Poco & Marshall Tucker Band, and some Grateful Dead of course… lots of repeats and some strange things that I’m not sure where the relevance lies, but hey.. I’m glad to have it. www.pandora.com.

I digress… I’m working on another larger sized cutting (16 x 20 inches) for my upcoming exhibit in Kansas City in November at Crosstown Station. I’ll have 10 + new works showing and I’ll post more details the sooner it approaches. Right now, I’m giving my exacto-hands a break. Here’s what I’m staring at when I’m not looking at my paper in front of me:

I had such a great time at this year’s Oktoberfest. It was my first time doing this event, as well as my first time displaying my work in my hometown. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Congrats to the Atchison Junior Guild for their terrific production. Special thanks to all the live musicians – they added so much energy to the day and they also gave me a good reason to keep my feet moving as it was a tad bit on the chilly side that morning.

Busy couple weeks coming up! I’ve got to get ready for the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin City which falls on Oct. 17 & 18. After that, I’ll be showing my work during the First Friday event for November at Crosstown Station in Kansas City. Which means, I’ll have lots of new things to show you!! More details to come…

What a weekend to be had in Topeka. This was my 2nd fair ever and once again, the response I had was wonderful. It was great meeting all the new folks – I had some great comrades around me (props to the chili guy who was coincidentally across from me in Lawrence two weeks ago as well. He kept me fed.) Lots of tips from my next door neighbor who has been doing arts & craft fairs for years and years. She said the 80s were supreme. Time travel? Thanks to the cookie lady to for her generous donation of sugar to my much needed late afternoon near-shutdown. Next week: the Oktoberfest in my hometown.
