My Grandma’s Matchbook Collection

She keeps them purely for the fact that she has candles to light. I, however, have coveted the tiny cases for their vintage designs. She’s got lots more, but these were the ones I … “borrowed”. Only one of these is actually recent (the black design with the silhouettes of glasses meant to look retro) – I brought it home from a bar and added it to her lot. The others are, I’m sure, at least 30 years old.

Not so sure this “Protecting Hand” image would be allowed in today’s design world..

Under The Weather

That’s me.. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a cold, and this one has left me on my rear for a couple days now. I’m inching further and further behind on my to-do list and consuming meals worth of cough drops. Just not in the mood to work. Or think. Or be awake. Woe is me..
Anyway, aside from that, I found myself in the children’s section of my local library the other day and it shot me back to my childhood — the same library I visited in my younger years. I’m of the philosophy that we should never stop being children.. easier said than done, but I often remember how I experienced things as a child and try to recreate that feeling as much as I can. I think it’s about being in the moment and forgetting the minutes before and ignoring the minutes ahead. I say this as I stare at a pile of receipts waiting to be sorted, categorized and filed. Who’s idea was this tax thing again? … I’ll leave you with this video clip from Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas by Jim Henson– I’m pretty sure a good portion of my imagination was shaped by him – Fraggle Rock, Kermit The Frog, and on and on. When I watch his work, it’s pure enjoyment at every moment.

Mid-Week Pre-Summer Retreat

To celebrate my brother’s 34th birthday, the fam decided to pack up and head to the cabin at our local State Lake, run by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The cabin is very nice and modern, but still in the outskirts where there’s no internet or phone signal.. It’s nice to be disconnected from time to time. And there’s not much that compares to sitting in the grass warming up under the morning sun with a cup of coffee and birds singing all around.

Barred Owl

Barred OwlI had dinner out in the country at a friend’s house the other night. Lucky her – she has a barred owl roosting in a tree trunk in her driveway! I’ve never seen a barred owl in person (in the wild, anyway). They have such mysterious faces and eyes- this is zoomed in pretty far, and the owl knew she (he?) had my attention – she turned her head and looked right at me. It didn’t help that I may have been squealing in delight… We saw her fly into the nest from a group of trees with a snake in her clutches. She was obviously feeding her young – she flew off empty-handed to a neighboring tree and let out the most amazing call. Click over to this link and listen to the sounds of the barred owl.

Krusemark’s Printing Co.

My grandfather and great-grandfather used to own & operate a printing company many, many years ago in my hometown. I don’t know a whole lot about it, but I was excited to get to frame these relics for a family member recently. Included is an old ad for the company, and little wood cut caricature stamps of “Bill and Bob” (Bob, my grandfather, is on the right. His father is on the left).
