Friday, Oh Friday

carside

About 10 seconds after I crossed the street in this exact spot this morning this happened.. I had just turned the immediate corner and then heard the noise, but continued walking because I thought it was something industrial from a next door business that’s always moving around heavy loads.. Upon my return a few minutes later, I realized it wasn’t. Nobody was hurt thankfully. My ears also witnessed a car accident yesterday (both of these happened just up the street from my house. What gives??). Lots of horn honking and then.. CRASH! I ran outside to see if people were ok (they were) but one driver was none too happy as she yelled at the other driver for ruining her car.. Hey, the first thought on my mind when I woke up yesterday morning was that I was thankful to be alive another day. And I suppose a car is something that lady probably worked or works hard for, but I hope she was also glad to be alive more than angry about her car.. To each his or her own I guess.

In other news, I restocked Phoenix Gallery this morning in Lawrence – lots of prints and cards and a couple original paper cuttings. Go visit. Then I headed across the street to Love Garden Sounds and in the mood for something to go along with this lovely weather, picked up the record “Hawaii Calls: Exotic Instrumentals”. It’s finally spring. It felt good to have the sun on my back as I ran this morning. And it felt good to sit on my deck and sip coffee and watch two hawks thermal higher and higher until they were almost out of sight. For a few seconds out there, I had childlike presence and didn’t think about all the things that need doing… which I must do now. Til next time.

Donkey, etc..

dadonk

I’ve put the donkey on hold while I finish up the backside to the record cover for band Maria the Mexican. Hoping to put the final touches on it tomorrow evening.

Tomorrow I’ll be visiting the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. I’ve never been there before and it seems like a good time to go. I’ve spent the better part of the last 10 days a bit down and out while nursing a cold (I get one cold a year.. of course on the week winter transitions to spring), so it’s time to get out and do something mentally stimulating now that it’s on the out and out.

The exhibit for the Lawrence Arts Center Annual Art Auction is hung (my piece “Budding Moon” is in it), so go check it out. And… one of my favorite paper cuttings, Ursa Major, has found a permanent home after I take my exhibit down from the Douglas County Law Library Gallery at the end of the month. If you haven’t been over to see it, it’ll be up until Mar. 31. Til next time…

Et Cetera…

blizzardo2013 I woke up to this snowy scene Tuesday morning.. I’ve been enjoying the snow days, but I think I’m starting to feel ready for spring. Definitely ready to get back out on the running trail (gotta prep for the Kansas City to Lawrence Brew 2 Brew Run coming up in April — a 44 mile relay race between Boulevard and Free State Breweries. I’m on a team with 9 other people. It’ll surely be a doozy..)

I’ll be doing some ‘live’ paper cutting at this Friday’s Monster Drawing Rally that kicks off Kansas City Design Week 2013 and benefits the Women in Design-Kansas City Scholarship Fund. All works will be available through a silent auction. Come hang out, enjoy happy hour, and watch some art makin’! Check this link for more details: http://www.facebook.com/events/121228168056838/

Today I’m finishing up the cover for the spring edition of The Lantern literary journal, and I also started sketching for the cover art for new CD & LP from band Maria The Mexican.

I also have been invited to have a solo exhibit at the Michael Phipps Gallery inside the main branch of the Omaha Public Library in Omaha, NE. I’m hammering out the details on that and I’ll post more info soon.

KC Design Week :: Monster Drawing Rally

I’ve been invited to be part of this year’s Monster Drawing Rally, and it kicks off the beginning of Kansas City Design Week 2013. I’ll be doing some ‘live’ paper cutting, and the artwork will be auctioned off afterward. It’s also part of the First Friday festivities in KC. I’ll post more when the date draws nearer.

Works in Progress/ Final Fridays in Lawrence

sunbirdtree

I’ve got a couple paper cuttings in progress. The tree design was commissioned for a tattoo based on the design “Book Tree” by artist Robert Whitmore, frequently used on bookplates starting in the 1930’s and still popular today. The bird is just a design that popped into my head and I felt like doing it.. It’s a sunbird. So.. there you go.

I’ll be hitting up the Final Friday festivities in downtown Lawrence this evening to consume some art (and food). I don’t have any originals up anywhere but I do have prints and greeting cards at both 1109 Gallery (1109 Mass.) and Essential Goods (17 E. 7th) and they are both open tonight for Final Fridays. See you out there perhaps.

Goings-On

framedjan2013

I got my latest paper cuttings framed and ready to go. I’ve been invited to hang my work up on Feb. 1 at the Douglas County Law Library and Judicial and Law Enforcement Center here in Lawrence. They’ll be there through the end of March. I also got my “Night Birds a’Cryin'” (the one in the middle) paper cutting back from the International Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro, KY, and it’s now available for sale. It was hanging since 2010 as part of the celebration of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe’s 100th birthday. It’s based on his song “The First Whippoorwill”.

I also sat in my car for an hour today and wrote out what *I think* will be the story line to the first animation I’m going to work on this year. Sometimes I need a change of scenery to really focus (it worked), plus, it’s proven difficult to think of images in motion with real stories to go along with them when I’m so used to thinking in still images based around a loose idea, but I like the challenge of it. I’ll spend this evening revising it and begin story-boarding tomorrow. I’m excited to get started on something. I spent a bit of time messing around with my new motion software today and I can tell it’s gonna take me some time to get the hang of it. Now is when my time management skills are going to need to come into existence… til next time.
