Things are coming along in the world of screen printing and sewing. I bought my own sewing machine, firstly, so I don’t have to borrow others’ machines since I think this is something I want to do more of. I did a proto-type that turned out fairly well, but I do admit to having trouble sewing in a straight line.. I’m working on that.. I had a few failures during printing where one brand of ink bled through the screen, and upon trying another (I bought two just to be safe), some of the first had dried on the screen and my image did not come out very uniformly.. so I lost a few things. But overall, it’s been going great, and it’s exciting for me! I like trying new things. (I said that in a muppet voice).
Happy Sunday. Today, I’m working on a paper cutting that will ultimately become a tattoo for a woman in memory of her mother. I’m packaging greeting cards for the upcoming shopping event this Thursday at Notre Dame De Sion in Kansas City. I’m thinking about primitive life before we humans went and complicated things. I’m thinking about how little I miss television since I quit watching it years ago. I’m listening to more Simon & Garfunkel. I’m updating my blog which I’ve been partly ignoring (hi!). I’m burning my owl image onto my screen for my pillows after failing with my Yudu emulsion sheets and hoping the Speedball photo emulsion that I bought as an alternative works.. I’m rambling. I’m over-thinking. I’m wishing. I’m planning. I’m looking at that cattail picture and envisioning myself sitting in front of it again in warmer weather (where’d spring go so suddenly?)… New stuff to come soon (paper cuttings, short animation in the works, pillows, etc.)
I posted the other day that I was going to try my hand again at printing and sewing my own pillows.. Read it HERE. So, I’ve officially begun work, starting with step 1 (in my jumbled order of steps): Prepare Owl transparency for screen printing. Next up: transfer image to screen using emulsion sheet.. I have a Yudu screen printing machine. I’m not sure I really understand it, but it worked the last and only time I used it over a year ago.. So fingers crossed.. Still trying to decide whether to make square pillow covers for 16 inch pillow inserts or make actual owl shaped pillows. I’m open to suggestions!
Three perfectly good ways to enjoy the first day of spring: 1. Relax in the sun on a blanket at the lake. 2. Take advantage of any and all photo taking opportunities in nature. 3. Enjoy a slice of leftover cherry chocolate birthday cake.
Three perfectly good ways to ruin the first day of spring: 1. Spill oil based wood stain on one of your more intricate original paper cuttings. 2. Venture too far into the sticks with flip-flops and camera and observe 3 foot long snake slither by inches away from your feet. Run too fast to take a picture. 3. Knock over your glass of milk and as you try to catch it, somehow throw your new iPhone in the glass with milk before both pour out all over your pants.
This is a Photoshop modified version of my original paper cutting titled “Night Owl” that I made last August (see it HERE). I’m going to try my hand at screen printing and pillow sewing once again, using this as the design and shape.. This may or may not work. We shall see..
