Friday Night Sunlight

I’m this week’s featured artist on EmptyEasel.com, an “online art magazine with practical advice, tips, and tutorials for creating and selling art.” Read the article here.
I’ve got a thing for tiny birds.. Nothing quite as sweet as a baby bird hopping around. Each of these baby bird paper cuttings measure approximately 1.5 x 2 inches. Sold.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the First Friday exhibit at Wearhaus. The music by Kirsten Paludan was wonderful (check her out on CDBaby), the sangria was mighty fine, and the weather did a complete 360 for the better… It was an all around great night. I have proven to be a total failure at capturing the finer moments of these shows on camera, but luckily, there were some finer folks that could sorta help me out.

Be sure to check out Wearhaus online at www.kcwearhaus.com. If you ever get the chance to stop by, do. There is a really cool boutique on the upper level with clothes, jewelry & more. My work will be hanging there through the end of April. Wearhaus is located at 1800 Central St., Ste. 204, in Kansas City, MO. Call for hours or an appointment: 816-842-1678.

Rachel and I have some problems taking pictures together. Our faces tend to get all twisted.
Last two photos by Jeff Pickman.
Hey, hey, Kansas City: Cut paper art, live music from Kirsten Paludan, shopping, sangria, & free Rural Pearl paraphernalia. It’ll be a groovy time! And, the rain and wind went away. It was meant to be. Come out! Info here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109086805776392&ref=mf

Here’s another teacup birdie. I have a burgeoning collection of teacups & coffee cups from my local thrift store.. I’m slightly obsessed.
2.5 x 4 inches. Sold.

It’s gonna be a party! On Friday, April 2, please come out for the First Fridays Celebration for April in Kansas City’s Crossroads Art District. My paper cuttings will be hanging at Wearhaus. Live music by Kirsten Paludan. Food, music, drinks, fun times. Hope to see you there!

Well, maybe not Bette Davis.. Of all the animals I’ve seen up close and personal, I think cows have the sweetest, most endearing eyes. Whenever I think of Bette Davis, I remember her role in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?”.. Yikes. I wrote a poem many years ago about a cow named Hilda that had tension issues. Perhaps I was actually writing about Bette’s character in that movie.. I digress. This little fella crawled out through the barbed wire and begged for a portrait shot… It’s all in the eyes.
In the printmaking class I was substituting for recently, we worked on a series of monoprints. Monoprints are fine art prints that are painted (inked, drawn, what-have-you) on a sheet of plastic or metal, and then transferred to damp paper by laying the paper face down on the sheet and running it through a printing press (or for at home-ers, rubbing the back with a smooth object or rolling pin). Although you can often do more than one print from the same plate depending on what is left on the plate after your first pressing, each print will differ and thus every monoprint will be completely unique.

This is my ‘on-the-fly’ monoprint.. I had an idea in my head that I was sketching out for something else, and this is what ended up on my plexiglas plate. I used a combination of acrylic water based printmaking ink and black oil pastels to draw, paint, and stamp the image. I really enjoy the way that colors can be layered on the plate to produce the texture in the paint that you see below.

Although it’s often hard to move away from cut paper, I really enjoy exploring and experimenting with different mediums from time-to-time.

I was approached by Ami of SpecialTea Brew to do a logo for this up-and-coming loose leaf tea & accessories company based out of the greater Redmond/ Seattle area. Ami liked one of my original papercuttings (Tea Time – see it here) and we worked together to modify it to fit into the overall concept of the company. Because SpecialTea Brew is going to be donating a portion of proceeds to breast cancer research, a pink ribbon was incorporated to signify such.
